Stories, Articles, Talks

In August 2024, I presented my latest work, Right Where You Are, as a video that you can view here. It is my first-ever work of non-fiction, an attempt at a ‘spiritual autobiography’, as well as an introduction to ‘applied mindfulness’, a personal practice that has given me enormous joy and benefit.

A couple of my short stories are available to read online: The Black Belt and A Good Dry Cleaner is Worth a Story.

A conversation between Leela and me on writing The Bad Smell Hotel together.

You can read an introduction I wrote for my novel, Shakti, an interview about the book, or listen to a conversation with Lynn Freeman of RNZ at the 2020 New Zealand Festival of the Arts.

Here’s a chat with Jesse Mulligan on RNZ about some of my favourite shows, books and music, including the Ramayana and the Mahabharata, Bollywood songs and movies, songs by Paul Simon and Nina Simone, books by Kafka and Haruki Murakami and the movie Sideways.

A talk I gave at Te Whare Toi City Gallery Wellington, reflecting on the place airports have had in my life.

So pleased to be part of a wonderful strand of writers speaking as part of the Nelson Arts Festival, 2021 about their relationship with home. You can watch my Writing Home contribution here.

I did a series of videos reflecting on how, and how much, I have drawn on real life in my storytelling. They do require a paid subscription to watch, but hopefully will be of some use if you've been thinking about similar things in your own writing life. I’m very grateful to the NZSA for the opportunity.

News and Events

You can watch an edited video of the wonderful launch event for The Bad Smell Hotel, very kindly put together by Joseph Robinson of Wellington City Libraries.

I occasionally appear as a guest on Radio New Zealand’s current affairs show, The Panel. You can listen to some of my segments here.
